Wharton to accept tuition fee payments in Bitcoin and Ethereum

According to Decrypt, on October 28, 2021, world-renowned business school, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, will support tuition payment in the form of cryptocurrency.

It is reported that the cryptocurrency payment option is limited to students enrolling in the six-week executive education course Economics of Blockchain and Digital Assets, offered online and exclusively for financial industry professionals. Students choosing this course can pay their tuition via cryptocurrency. Supported cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin, Ethereum or USDC.

At the current price, the cost of this course is less than one Ethereum.

Wharton’s payment service is processed via Coinbase Commerce, a subsidiary of Coinbase. Coinbase charges merchants a 1% service fee. According to Coinbase, payments can be made with any chain wallet.

Wharton currently only supports payment of the tuition fees for this course in Bitcoin and Ethereum. However, the individual in charge at Wharton said that in the future, Wharton and other schools are likely to adopt blockchain payment methods.

It is worth noting that the Wharton School is the second US college to support cryptocurrency payment for tuition. Previously, only one American university allowed this – King's College in New York began accepting cryptocurrency for tuition fee payments in 2014.

The University of Pennsylvania is no stranger to Bitcoin – the Ivy League school announced earlier this year that it had received a cryptocurrency gift from an anonymous donor in the amount of $5 million in Bitcoin to support innovation in finance.

The University of Pennsylvania, which requires crypto donations to be at least $10,000, has been accepting crypto donations for many years, as have other American universities.
